Animal Shelter Temporarily Halts Cat Adoptions Due to Virus

Summary

LEWISTON ? The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society has temporarily halted all cat adoptions and is asking the public not to bring in cats as it deals with a virulent feline upper respiratory virus.

For about the past week, the Lewiston shelter has been struggling with a contagious illness that its veterinarian believes is feline calicivirus. Although the virus hits kittens the hardest, it can also affect adult cats. The shelter has quarantined all of its cats for at least seven days, treating them for the illness and any secondary infections that arise. About two dozen cats have died since the outbreak began.
