AUBURN - A plan to send lawbreaking kids more than 100 miles away drew condemnation Monday from local sheriffs, who charge that the move will cost counties tens of thousands of dollars.

"It's devastating for us," Androscoggin County Sheriff Guy Desjardins said. He estimated that the cost this year likely would surpass $150,000.
