Summary
I naturally gravitate to gadgets some call "heat-seeking" since they're cool and cost a lot. There is no shortage of them for this back-to-school season. But I restrained myself and included a mix of both affordable gadgets and cool luxuries on my list of the best new seasonal toys. The hope is that some of the gadgets have at least a shot at being used for school work. Some aren't totally brand new, but I do think they are a good fit for students.The new iMac: Ideal for dorms
Apple's new iMac computers are ideal for crowded dorm rooms. The all-in-one desktop - with computer and 20-inch LCD monitor built into the same thin, stainless steel chassis - doesn't take up much space and comes with a lot of things that cost extra on PCs, such as an integrated Webcam, chat program, wireless networking, speakers, and the much-improved iLife 08 digital lifestyle software. The coolest new features are in the software for editing photos and videos. It starts at $1,199 for the 20-inch and goes up to $1,799 for a 24-inch model.
